History
The Providence Garden Club, as it was originally called, had its beginning in 1931. In that year, a small group of women from the Wallingford area began meeting monthly in each other’s homes to share their interest in gardening and floral design. Annual dues were $3.
In 1947, the club was invited to join The Garden Club of America. To firmly plant us south of Rhode Island, “of Pennsylvania” was added to the club’s name.
Three years later members participated in the Philadelphia Flower Show. Club entries have continued ever since and have been rewarded with ribbons of every color. The artistic and creative talents of our members also are on display at the two club flower shows held each year.
Throughout the year our club tends the grounds of the historic Thomas Leiper House as well as the gardens at the Helen Kate Furness Library, both located in Wallingford. Our members also volunteer at The Physic Garden and the Magnolia Tribute Garden in Philadelphia.
December ushers in our annual Christmas Workshop. We gather fresh greens and make well over a hundred swags and wreaths to decorate the local campus of The Elwyn Institute, a provider of services for people with disabilities.
When our own gardens come alive in early spring, we dig up countless perennials, then divide and re-pot them during our “Potting Up” workshops. Along with a selection of annuals, perennials, trees and shrubs, the plants are offered for sale at our annual Plant Sale. Profits from this major endeavor, which in one year topped $12,000, make it possible for the club to provide financial support to a range of local conservation, beautification, and horticulture programs.
Providence Garden Club of Pennsylvania continues its mission of educating members and the community in conservation, floral design, and horticulture, and encouraging civic planting, beautification and stewardship of the environment. As in the club’s early years, a love of gardening is at the heart of all our activities.
